Celebrations and gatherings traditionally increase from November to January. The holidays are a busy time for cleaning, decorating, and making memories with your family and loved ones. This rush of activity may prevent you from noticing potential fire hazards which can compromise your quality time.
At ServiceMaster by Wright, we understand how important safety is to you. Here are some tips to remember when decorating for the holiday season.
The American Red Cross recommends doing the following:
- Inspect your fire and smoke alarms before the gatherings and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
- When shopping for decorations, choose those classified as fire-resistant or fire-retardant and marked safe by a recognized testing facility/organization.
- Use lights as specified by the manufacturer; indoor lights must only be hung indoors.
- Inspect your light cords for damages. String no more than three light strands per extension cord.
- Turn off all holiday lights before sleeping or leaving the house.
- Prevent cord damage by using clips instead of nails when hanging lights.
- Candle fires peak in December and January. Use battery-operated LED candles instead of lit ones to achieve the same effect.
- Keep decorations away from entrances and exits, hallways, and heat sources.
- Children and pets must be at least three feet away from any heat source. Matches and lighters must be stored in a cabinet away from children's reach.
- When using a ladder, stand on it in a stable way and wear shoes with a good grip.
Christmas Tree Safety
- When choosing a live tree, choose a fresh one with healthy needles that do not fall off when held.
- Keep your tree well-watered to maintain its freshness. To increase water absorption, cut two inches from the base of the trunk.
- If you plan to go for an artificial tree, choose one labeled as fire-resistant.
- Never decorate a tree with lit candles.
- Christmas trees must never obstruct any passageway.
- Discard Christmas trees once they turn dry. You can research if there is a recycling program for old Christmas trees in your area.
